The following is a letter received from Stephen McKee, Project Field Manager at Black & Veatch. Thank you for the kind words on a job well done by the Sterling Boiler team!
Westar LEC Unit 4 Fall Outage Performance
I wanted to send you my sincere thanks on a job well done. As you know, for the entire project, we have all thought and stated that the Unit 4 Tie-In Outage was our biggest challenge to the success of the entire project. Sterling Boiler’s performance was flawless during the execution of this outage and the earlier than planned turnover of the unit was a welcomed event that deserves accolades.
The Sterling Boiler team utilized their tremendous planning abilities and the lessons learned from previous outages to put together a solid plan to attack all the complexities that this outage posed, which include a great deal of work in a very small footprint, heavy demolition, tight quarters to fit large pieces, safety issues being adjacent to an active coal pile and rail siding for coal cars being unloaded, internal vessel work including stainless steel materials, multiple craft trades involved, etc. The site team was able to demonstrate this plan graphically and by scheduling during our multiple planning meetings so that all parties involved could logically understand when and where to be to complete their respective work scopes without disrupting others.
The plans were refined and reviewed multiple times and then it was time to execute the plan and Sterling Boiler lead the way in flawless execution and worked with all others to help the effort for a total success for the Outage.
To have an outage planned for 10 weeks in duration and actually release to operations after 8.5 weeks, indicates Platinum performance.
In closing, I welcome Sterling Boiler to be a part of our team for any outage, but especially for the complex and challenging ones due to your ability to plan the work and work the plan, and along the way seizing every opportunity to improve the many facets of project success.
Again, thank you and please forward my sincere congratulations to the entire team for a job well done.
